Hello and welcome to Songbirds Day Nursery and Kids Club. My name is Susan Goodwin and I am the Proprietor and Manager of the setting. I have lived in Preston all my life and I am well known in the local community.
I started the Nursery in 1997 after my sister needed to go back to work and was unable to find suitable childcare. I began childminding from home and after my reputation grew I employed assistants and converted a stable in my garden to operate from there.
Unable to keep up with demand I decided to open a small nursery with the same ethos and values that I hold so dear, being small numbers of children in rooms and providing a good quality childcare service for parents and children aged 3months to 11 years upwards.
I leased the site on Staithes Road from 2003 until 2011 when the land was sold and I then faced a difficult battle to relocate. After several failed attempts to find a suitable site I found the property on Station Road which I bought in December 2011 and after some refurbishment opened in February 2012. The Nursery is set in 1/2 an acre of private gardens and has its own car park. It is conveniently located on Station Road Preston, opposite the schools and the journey into Hull takes approximately 15 minutes.
It has been an exciting time especially deciding on our new ethos which is Eco and Nurture (see the page). Our mission statement is 'the Village Nursery' which I feel supports the ethos and expresses the caring nature of the people who care and educate the children.
I am very well supported by my staff team including my two Deputy Managers Thelma Clark and Lucy Hopper. I carefully recruit my staff team, some of whom have been with me for many years and I provide ongoing staff training to keep everyone up to date with latest childcare practice and parents needs.
I hope your child has a happy and fulfilling time at my Nursery / Kids Club and I am always open to suggestions about any ideas to improve and develop the nursery further. I was very proud to gain a GOOD grade with 5 OUTSTANDING features including safeguarding in our last OFSTED inspection in 2010.
